Introducing Bruichladdich Octomore 14.2, a new single malt Scotch whisky from the peaty powerhouse Octomore series, which was launched on the 14th annual release of the Bruichladdich distillery in Islay. It is matured in 44% second-fill Amarone barrels, 40% first-fill Oloroso hogsgeads, and 16% first-fill Amarone barrels rather than first-fill bourbon casks. Distilled from 100% Scottish mainland Concerto barley, has a 128.9 ppm, and is bottled at 57.7% abv. Although it is malted to the same ppm and uses the same variety of barley as the14.1, the 14.2 spirit’s liquids differ significantly from the 14.1 spirit due to the impact of wine and sherry casks. It is marketed as “the most heavily peated Scotch whisky series in the world”.
Octomore 14.2, which has a deep amber hue, smells of leather, plums, red berries, and malted barley. Toasted oak, cinnamon, green apple, and black pepper are all detectable. The fragrance progresses to waves of smoke and vivid red fruit, accompanied by grain notes of malt and porridge. The peat smoke is gloomy and dry, with a faint pipe tobacco flavor from the oak and a trace of charred heather.
The mouthfeel is distinctly influenced by European oak, with a hint of dryness countered by the brightness of roasted coffee, smoked oak, and wood spices. Rich fruit cake and dried fruit pair well with the taste of BBQ sweetness and a little bit of black pepper. The wine barrels’ fruity sweetness and smoke are heightened by a drop of water, resulting in a well-balanced flavors of apple and pear grow with the dram. Smoky malt, sea salt, and burning oak give way to a finish that completes with Octomore’s distinct earthy smoke.
