In the 1980s and 1990s, the future of the distillery was uncertain until its acquisition by the Glenmorangie Company in 1997, which ushered in a new era of success and innovation. Since then, Ardbeg has grown into a globally revered brand, boasting a dedicated following of whisky enthusiasts and earning accolades such as Whisky of the Year from Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible for three consecutive years. Ardbeg Grooves stands as a testament to the distillery’s creativity and fearless approach to whisky-making.
What sets Ardbeg Grooves apart is its innovative production process. This limited-edition whisky was matured in re-charred red wine casks sourced from Portugal, an unconventional choice that imbues the spirit with unique flavors and depth. After the red wine casks are emptied, they undergo an intense re-charring process, resulting in deep grooves along the inside of the barrel. These grooves allow the whisky to extract concentrated flavors from the wood, creating a distinctive smoky profile reminiscent of spiced meats and campfire smoke. By blending this grooved cask whisky with classic Ardbeg matured in American bourbon casks, a complex and harmonious expression is born.
