The Distillery
The Glenlossie distillery was founded in 1876 by John Duff, a former manager of Glendronach. The distillery lies south of Legin, in the village of Thomshill.
After twenty years in operation, John Duff stepped down from Glenlossie in 1896 after becoming increasingly involved in another distillery – Longmorn.
Henry Mackay, one of founding partners, took over operations and led the company until 1919 when it was acquired by DLC. After a series of new acquisitions the company is now owned by Diageo.
Glenlossie is unknown to many since it does not release any official bottlings. Whisky from Glenlossie is used in popular blends but their names have not been disclosed.
Today Glenlossie operates happily under Diageo’s oversight. Glenlossie’s ten warehouses can hold as much as 200,000 casks, and accordingly, other Diageo-owned whisky distilleries have been afforded storage there. Consistent advances have led the distillery to a mid-sized capacity with annual output of approximately 2.14M litres.
If you’ve got a chance to try a Glenlossie single malt, seize the opportunity. There is a reason that blenders continue to use their whisky!
