Whatever your opinion of the president elect, it’s clear that Donald Trump has good taste in spirits.
A 26-year-old bottle of Glendronach whisky, signed by Donald Trump himself, was auctioned yesterday, the 13th of January. While the bottle was estimated to sell for £2,500-£3,500 the final bid of £6,000, from a Canadian buyer, shocked whisky fans worldwide.
The whisky was distilled in 1985, aged in a sherry cask, and then bottled back in 2012 for the opening of the Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire. The name and signature of the new President of the United States is showcased on the bottle and the box it comes in.
With Trump’s inauguration taking place on the 20th of January, the auction has been well-timed to take advantage of the excitement and buzz. With the bottle selling at almost double the estimated price, there’s no doubt the auctioneer’s strategy worked!
In December 2016, two bottles of GlenDronach 26-year-old, also signed by Trump, were auctioned on Whisky-Auction. The bottles were sold for £1,550 and £2,000. Compared to yesterday’s auction one can easily see the effect Trump’s Presidency is having all over the world, reaching even the whisky industry.
Laurie Black, a whisky expert at McTear’s Auctioneers where the bottle was sold, said before the auction, “I suspect Mr. Trump’s imminent elevation to the position of ‘Leader of the Free World’ will have a significant bearing on the value of the 26-year-old GlenDronach.”
After the auction, Black added, “There was a huge amount of interest in the bottle and we were delighted with the final price, which was several times more than previous Trump bottles have sold for.”
This bottle is number 63 of 504 bottles released, of which only a select few have been signed by President Trump.
This one comes with authenticated documents, a procedure which will most likely be expected from here on, following the recent news of fake bottles of rare Scotch coming to the market.
